Nestled in the valley between Vermont’s
Green
Mountains and Lake Champlain,
St. Albans has a rich and varied past. Located just 15 mi (23 km) south
of the Canadian border, its position close to the lake and Canada
has
played a significant role in the development of the town. Historically,
Abenaki and Iroquois tribes fished the large body of water long before
Samuel de Champlain officially discovered it in 1609. A
couple of centuries later, in 1864, St. Albans experienced the most
northerly raid of the American Civil War when a group of confederates
came south from Canada and briefly took control of the town.
The Historical
Society Museum highlights these events as well as
the town’s
importance as the railroad center for northern Vermont.
More recently, St. Albans is known for hosting the annual Vermont
Maple Festival and for almost endless year-round
recreation.
Lake Champlain offers water-based activities like kayaking, sailing and
fishing and the Missisquoi
Valley Rail Trail, which runs from St. Albans to
Richford, is
a popular trail for cycling, hiking and cross-country skiing. Like so
much of Vermont, the area also puts on a spectacular show when the countryside comes alive with both color
and visitors during the vibrant fall foliage season.
